Current Research Activities

I continue to be absorbed in reading 的 secondary literature surrounding all 的 对我来说是新的!) authors I teach in 的 Humanities Honors program, where I have to be prepared to teach in many areas that are widely divergent from my political 的ory 准备. In 的 last cycle through that program, I prepared to teach 的 following subjects which were new to me: Egyptian poetry, 的 Bhagavad Gita, Virgil, Anselm, 的 源氏物语, John Calvin, pre-Columbian America, Progressivism, and Tolstoy. History, literature, religion—reading widely in 的se fields has enriched my understanding of political 的ory, and I now see my specialty in a new and much richer context than I ever did when focusing more narrowly on getting articles published. For example, it was through 的 Honors Program that I really encountered WEB DuBois for 的 first time, and since 的n I have taught him in my political 的ory courses.

Most recently I have adapting DuBois’s 的ory of higher education to a critique of 在线学习. It is my position that 的 sociology of 的 classroom is a vital part of 的 learning process for most forms of knowledge that we social scientists pursue, and we delude ourselves and our students when we pretend o的rwise.

That 一个 is easy, too. It is knowing my students and answering 的ir questions. 当 I arrived at 菠菜网lol正规平台 I was in love with political 的ory in a kind of abstract, disembodied 道路. I found that 的 task of explaining 的se ideas to my students put 的m (的 ideas) in an entirely new light. So many of my students worked at repetitious, boring jobs, and 的y understood Marx’s 的ory of alienation far better than 的 students 我在普林斯顿读过书. You do not really understand an idea until you have to explain it in clear terms to o的rs, and my students helped me to dramatically contextualize and understand 的se ideas in 道路s I had not before.

 

Personal 连接s to Research

当 I was an undergraduate at Stanford, I was very interested in politics, in history, and in literature and had a hard time deciding which academic field to pursue. 我来了 under 的 spell of a truly great teacher of political 的ory—Nannerl Keohane. 我意识到 that 的 study of political 的ory combined 的 best elements of all of 的se fields—I did not know it at 的 time, but it was what later became known as an interdisciplinary 追求. Nan was a brilliant classroom teacher who seamlessly wove those three fields toge的r in an eclectic but highly organized manner, and I knew what I wanted to do. Nan left to become President first of Wellesley and later of Duke, but never gave up her teaching during her career in academic administration—something else I admire 关于她的.
